The 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs start on or around April 18th, 2025. It should be another fun postseason for hockey fans this year.
How Teams Earn a Spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
There will be 16 teams who earn a spot in the 2025 NHL playoff bracket. In the Stanley Cup playoff schedule, the teams are seeded based on points earned during the season. Each of the three divisional winners earn automatic bids as well as the top two teams in each division. Then, the best remaining two teams earn a spot, so we have Wild Card teams in the bracket that you’ll see labeled by WC and what number wild card spot they are.
What is the NHL Playoff Series Format?
Every series during the playoffs is a best of seven series. They will typically rotate between the two home rinks of the teams playing. The higher seed will host the first two games, then the lower the next two. Then it’s home, away, home for the higher seeds location if it goes the full seven games. The first team to win four games wins the series.
NHL Playoff Seeding
For the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the team with the most points in each conference is their respective overall #1 seed. They get to play the lowest ranked Wild Card team. The #2 overall ranked team plays the better wild card team. Then, the seeds are setup by ranking. There is no reseeding of the teams after the first round of the playoffs.
